There is no initial teaching qualification for Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) in Scotland. There are therefore special requirements for registration in this category.
Applicants must have a degree with 80 SCQF credit points in English at SCQF level 7 or above, at least 40 of which must be at level 8 or above. At least 40 SCQF credit points must cover study of the English language. N.B. if the candidate is a native speaker of English, the language component can be made up of study of other modern foreign languages, e.g. French or German.
An initial teaching qualification which extends to SCQF level 9 or above and is comparable in organisation to the Scottish initial teaching qualification (the PGDE) which is one academic year in length and includes teaching practice. Please note that we cannot accept CPD degrees in TESOL (e.g. the MEd in TESOL) towards this requirement.
At least 7 years' full time equivalent satisfactory and well-attested teaching of TESOL in secondary schools. We cannot accept teaching service in private language schools. We will require references on all relevant service undertaken.
