Policy Governing Deferral Requests Prior to and Following Commencement of a Teacher Induction Scheme Post

The GTC Scotland Deferral Policy (pdf) applies to requests for the deferral of a Teacher induction Scheme place to the following academic session by:

  • student teachers wishing to request a deferral:
    1. pre-allocation, ie before they have been allocated to a local authority for their Teacher Induction year
    2. post-allocation, ie after allocation to a local authority, but prior to taking up their Teacher Induction Scheme post at the commencement of the school term
  • probationer teachers wishing to request a deferral after commencing their Teacher Induction Scheme post.

An appeal against a decision of the Assessment Panel must be submitted in writing, by completing the Appeal form against a decision of the Assessment Panel to a Deferral Request of TIS post (pdf), within 14 days of the probationer being informed of that decision.

It is expected that the policy will be useful for the following audiences:

  • schools and professional associations
  • student teachers
  • probationer teachers
  • probationer managers
  • Scottish Government Teachers Division
  • HMIE Inspector of Schools
  • employing authorities
  • student teacher partnerships
  • those members of other professions, and the public more generally, who have an interest in the professional development of teachers
