Repeal of Schools (Scotland) Code 1956

The Repeal of Schools (Scotland) Code 1956 (pdf) is our response to the Scottish Executive's consultation on the draft regulations to repeal the remainder of The Schools (Scotland)Code 1956 (pdf) and replace certain aspects of the Code.

The Schools (Scotland) Code 1956 requires education authorities to employ only teachers who are registered with GTC Scotland and who are appropriately qualified for the post to which they're employed.  Over the years the Code has been amended but parts of it are now out-of-date and are inappropriate.

We realise that this is a significant step both for the teaching profession and for pupils in terms of the quality of teaching and learning for the 21st Century and welcome the opportunity to respond.

Our response details:

  • regulation to be retained
  • regulations which appear not to be retained
  • proposed amendments to the draft 2005 replacement regulations
  • the way forward
  • framework for professional recognition
  • the opportunity
