Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the ongoing learning and development of teachers throughout their careers. All teachers have a contractual commitment to undertake 35 hours of CPD per year.

Types of Professional Development

There are a a wide range of experiences that can contribute to professional development, including reading, attending conferences and courses that are on offer.

GTC Scotland provides the following:

  • Chartered Teacher - a qualification-based Chartered Teacher grade aimed at experienced teachers
  • The Standard for Headship - a framework for a training programme for headship aimed at aspiring headteachers
  • Professional Recognition - a framework for registered teachers to gain professional recognition for sharing and enhancing their knowledge/experience
  • Professional Registration - a framework for registered teachers to gain professional registration in different subject areas or different sectors
  •  - an opportunity for teachers to carry out detailed research for the Council
