Deferral Requests

Students wishing to defer entry to the Scheme must request a deferral, which is then considered by the GTC Scotland Assessment Panel. Deferrals of one year will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Who can request a deferral?

The Deferral Policy applies to students wishing to request a deferral:

  • pre-allocation i.e. before they have been allocated to a local authority for their Induction year, and
  • post-allocation - Pre August i.e. after allocation to a Local Authority but prior to taking up an induction placement before the school term commences.

If you wish to defer entry, please read the TIS Deferral Policy Instructions and Guidance and complete the TIS Deferral Request Form (pdf). This form should be returned to:

Not completed your course on time?

Students are not required to request a deferral if they will not complete their course in time to commence the Teacher Induction Scheme in August.

All students must have successfully completed their initial teacher education course by 7 July to join the Teacher Induction Scheme in August. If students do not qualify by the 7 July deadline, then entitlement to a place on the Scheme is automatically deferred to the next Teacher Induction Scheme in August the following year, once GTC Scotland has confirmation of the students' status from the relevant University.

In these cases, GTC Scotland will cancel the students application and send a letter confirming their involuntary deferral to the next Scheme.  Please note that GTC Scotland cannot track those who have deferred and not subsequently re-applied.  It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they receive the relevant application form to apply for the Teacher Induction Scheme the following year.

Students are eligible to work as a supply teacher when they have passed their course until they join Teacher Induction Scheme the following year, however students must register with GTC Scotland before doing so.
