Your vote counts
Nominations to fill seven of the 19 elected registered teacher seats on the Council for a four-year term and a further four interim seats via a by-election on the independent GTC Scotland Council with effect from 2 April 2018 have now closed.
Nominations received are being verified. Details of all candidates standing for election will be available on our website at www.gtcs.org.uk/election from 11 December 2017.
Now it’s for you to decide
This is a real opportunity for you to shape your profession by voting in the Council Election. By voting for your preferred candidates, you are influencing the direction and decisions that the GTC Scotland Council takes in the public interest.
Voting is solely online. Your unique PIN which you will require in order to vote will be issued by email so please remember to update your email address in MyGTCS to register your vote.
What will happen next
The voting stage of the election (including counting of votes) will be run independently of GTC Scotland by Electoral Reform Services (ERS). ERS are providing a secure dedicated website for the election.
1. Online voting opens on Wednesday 10 January 2018. By this date ERS will send an email with ballot instructions and information to all teachers on the register in the primary/nursery, secondary and further education voting categories.
2. The ballot email will:
give the election website address where you can vote online;
and contain a two-part security code number (PIN) unique to you as a registrant. You will need to enter both parts of the security code number in order to gain access to the voting page on the election website. The unique PIN will enable you to vote in the election category entered against your name in the register on 8 December 2017.
3. The website will contain details of the candidates and will give clear instructions on how to select your chosen candidates and submit your vote.
4. The online voting service will be available 24 hours a day until 5pm on Friday 2 February 2018.
What you need to do
Make sure we hold an up-to-date email address for you and that you are in the correct election category by Friday 8 December 2017. Log into MyGTCS or sign up for a MyGTCS account to: • add or update your email address • check and request a change to your election category.
If you do not have access to the internet or an email address, you can still participate
Further information on the GTC Scotland Council and its members, and how you are allocated to an election category and how the election process is available on the ERS election website at: www.votebyinternet.com/GTCS and on the GTC Scotland website at: www.gtcs.org.uk/election
We do not want registrants to be marginalised or disenfranchised, and we are keen to assist registrants in any way we can to be able to vote.
If you do not have a computer or device (such as a smartphone) to connect to the internet, we would encourage you to make use of any library or other public internet facility in your area, or to ask a friend who has internet access to help you. With internet access you will be able to set up an email address to receive your ballot email with instructions and your unique PIN to vote, and also to access the election website to vote. We would also be happy to advise on how to set up an email address or assist you with this in any way we can.
Alternatively, if you are currently employed as a teacher, we would encourage you to speak to your employer about setting up a workplace email address for this purpose. We are engaging with teachers’ employers to seek their support in assisting teachers to vote in the Council Election.
We also acknowledge that, due to certain circumstances, some registrants may not be able to set up an email address or receive emails. If you are in this position, please get in touch with us so that we can assist in enabling you to receive the relevant ballot instructions and your PIN to vote in the election.
