Teaching Leaders of the Future Receive Standard for Headship

5 May 2020

Headteachers of the future have been awarded with the General Teaching Council for Scotland’s Standard for Headship after successfully completing the Education Scotland coordinated Into Headship programme.

Over 100 teachers across Scotland have been awarded the Standard for Headship.
As of August 2020, any teacher appointed to their first permanent Headteacher post must have been awarded the GTC Scotland Standard for Headship. The Into Headship course is Scotland’s national programme for aspiring headteachers, and allows them to achieve all the elements required by the Standard.

Into Headship, delivered in partnership with seven universities, aims to ensure aspiring headteachers are supported to develop and continue to build the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding required of senior leaders in leading a dynamic school community. Completion of Into Headship is now a prerequisite for all those who aspire to achieving the post of headteacher within the next 2-3 years.

The online teacher profiles of successful participants have now been updated with the Standard for Headship, and they will receive their certificates through the post in the coming weeks.

Ken Muir, Chief Executive and Registrar, GTC Scotland said “We are delighted to congratulate this year’s successful cohort on their achievement of the Standard for Headship. The pandemic has shone a light on the value of strong, critically-informed leadership in our schools and learning communities. The recipients of the Standard for Headship will join a strong network of leaders in Scotland’s teaching sector dedicated to maintaining and continuing to develop the quality of education for our children and young people.”

We are sorry to be unable to celebrate with this years’ cohort in person, but hope they will join us online for a toast to their success.”

HM Chief Inspector and CEO of Education Scotland Gayle Gorman said: “I am delighted to congratulate the awardees of Standard for Headship. It is an example of the excellent leadership we see across Scottish Education, especially in these challenging times.  I would like to congratulate all Standard in Headship graduates for their achievement and wish them well for the future.”

This year’s GTC Scotland and Education Scotland Leadership Award Celebration will take place online on 3 June 2020. Standard for Headship recipients have been invited to join the organisations on twitter @gtcs and @edScotPLL from 2pm on Wednesday 3
June to celebrate. Use the hashtag #leadGTCSES to join the celebration.
