New Fitness to Teach Rules and Threshold Policy
The General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) is implementing new Fitness to Teach Rules, which will come into force on 21 August 2017.
The Rules set out the procedure that is followed when GTCS investigates and determines the fitness to teach of registrants or applicants for registration.
The new Rules were subject to a public consultation which ran from September through to the end of November 2016.
Jennifer Macdonald, GTCS Director of Regulation and Legal Services, said:
“The changes made will streamline our fitness to teach procedures, making them quicker and more targeted towards addressing risk of harm.”
“The protection of the public remains central to GTCS’s fitness to teach processes. Our aim is to achieve new procedures that are effective, proportionate, transparent, consistent and sensitive to those involved.”
A new Fitness to Teach Threshold Policy is also being introduced, which sets out what GTCS investigates under its fitness to teach procedures. The document provides important information for anyone wishing to make a fitness to teach referral to GTCS about a teacher.
