Scottish Universities

There are eight Universities in Scotland which offer programmes of Initial Teacher Education (ITE):

Accrediting Programmes of ITE

Since GTC Scotland is expected to register teachers who have fulfilled the requirements of Scottish programmes of ITE, we must satisfy ourselves as to the professional appropriateness of such programmes.

The Scottish Government Education Department's Guidelines for Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Courses in Scotland state that:

"All courses must be acceptable to GTC Scotland as leading to registration as a primary or secondary teacher."

The main purposes of accreditation are to:

  • ensure the professional appropriateness of programmes
  • ensure compliance with statutory requirements
  • provide objective information about the quality of programmmes
  • determine and advise on approval
  • inform policy
  • stimulate enhancement of the quality of provision
