27.05.08 GTC Scotland launches new code of conduct for teachers

A new Code of Professionalism and Conduct for teachers was launched by the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Fiona Hyslop today, Tuesday, 27 May 2008.

The Code of Professionalism and Conduct has been drawn up by the General Teaching Council for Scotland following widespread consultation with the profession, parents, unions and employers. It sets out the key principles and values for registered teachers in Scotland and also explains to members of the public the standard of conduct expected of registered teachers.

The Code does not cover every possible circumstance in which a teacher might find themselves, however teachers should be mindful of it in relation to the judgements they make in situations both within and outwith the classroom.

Speaking at the launch at Roseburn Primary School in Edinburgh, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Fiona Hyslop said:

"I warmly welcome this Code. It provides clear guidance on the standard of conduct and professionalism expected of Scotland's teachers. The Scottish Government is pleased to endorse it."

Chief executive and Registrar of the GTC Scotland, Matthew MacIver said:

"The Code is a guide for teachers as to what is acceptable practice in and out of the classroom and for parents and pupils to know what they should expect from teachers.

"As the professional regulatory body for teaching in Scotland, the GTC has a statutory responsibility to maintain and enhance professional standards and to regulate the teaching profession in the public interest. We aim to uphold the standing of the profession in the eyes of the public, government, educational stakeholders, and teachers themselves. In fulfilling this role the GTC Scotland is accountable both to the public and the profession."

"This code is a guide to ensure the high standards of teaching that exist in Scotland today are maintained and enhanced.
