George D Gray Award

The George D Gray CBE MA Award is made annually to the student who produces the best Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) dissertation in Scotland.

George Gray was the first Registrar of the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), largely responsible for winning Government support for setting up the GTCS.

Now running for seven years, the award was initiated by a trust fund set up by his widow, Dr Ethel Gray, as a memorial to her husband. It is usually presented at the December meeting of Council to the student who produces the best Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) dissertation in Scotland.

The winning student, along with family and friends, attends the opening of the Council meeting and accepts a gift and certificate from the Chief Executive/Registrar and Convener of Council.

There are usually around 20 dissertations presented by the seven Scottish Universities, each one rigorously judged by a GTCS panel comprising:

  • Anthony Finn, Chief Executive, GTCS
  • Professor Ron Elder, Chair of the Panel, formerly of the University of Dundee
  • Dr Ivor Sutherland, retired former Registrar of the GTCS
  • Gillian Mackay, Head Teacher, Commercial Primary School, Fife
  • Professor Judith George OBE, formerly of the Open University
