Election 2009

Voting in the 2009 election of registered teachers to the Council closed at noon on Friday 25 September, with the deadline for the receipt of postal ballot papers extended until Friday 2 October due to industrial action at Royal Mail.

Following the close of the election, the following candidates have been elected to serve on the Twelfth Council from 1 November 2009 for a period to be determined by the Scottish Ministers as part of the Scottish Government's plans to grant GTC Scotland independent status (at present estimated to be around two years).

Category I - Headteachers in Primary Schools or Nursery Schools

  • Frieda E Fraser - Crosshouse Primary School, East Kilbride
  • Alison H Palmer - Arrochar Primary School, Arrochar
  • Lilias L Proudfoot - Leslie Primary School, Leslie
  • John Telford - Eastfield Primary and Nursery Class, Cumbernauld

In this category there were no duly and properly nominated candidates and there is no candidate to be elected

Category VI - Teachers in Further Education Centres

  • Hugh M Paton - Anniesland College, Glasgow

Category VII - Teachers in Relevant Institutions (ie Higher Education Institution providing courses for the education and training of teachers)

  • Anne T Wilson - Faculty of Education, University of Strathclyde

Key dates

  • 20-24 April: Election advertised; nomination papers available online or on request
  • 31 May: Closing date for receipt of nomination papers; by this date all candidates must be in the correct election/voting category 
  • 20 August: Closing date for electors; by this date all electors must be in the appropriate election/voting category 
  • 1 September: Ballot papers issued (including information relating to voting by post or online) 
  • 25 September: Closing date for receipt of ballot papers by post or votes online 
  • 1 October: Publication of results 
  • 29 and 30 October: Induction meetings of the new Council (2 days) 
  • 1 November: New Council takes office 
  • 19 November: Inaugural meeting of the new Council
