Education Committee

Remit (with advisory functions)

Responsible for:

  • all educational issues, including policy, qualifications etc
  • preparation for consideration by Council of draft recommendations relating to:
    • entry standards to teaching (including Scottish Ministers' draft Memoranda on Entry Requirements and Courses)
    • the education, training and fitness to teach of teachers
    • teacher supply
  • dealing with matters concerning further education ie
    • to enhance the Council's interest and involvement in the Further Education Sector
    • to promote the work of the Council and its profile in Scotland's Colleges (of Further and Higher Education)
    • to increase the numbers of further education (FE) lecturers registering with the Council
    • to initiate and maintain contact with College Principals, Boards of Management, the Association of Scottish Colleges, and the professional associations concerned with further education
    • to liaise with other appropriate Committees
    • to take whatever steps are thought necessary within the Council policy to meet its further education commitments
    • to consider such other matters as may be referred or delegated to it by the Council
    • to make recommendations to the Council - with particular regard to issues of and modifications to Council policy
  • providing an important forum for educational debate
  • responding to key consultation documents
  • co-ordinating the Council's research strategy
